Tailoring Your Insurance Career Path: Advice from Sedgwick’s Phoebe Millin

In a competitive industry like insurance, standing out starts with intention — how you present yourself, how you shape your application, and how well your values align with a company’s culture.

We spoke with Phoebe Millin, Talent Acquisition Business Partner at Sedgwick, to gather expert guidance for early-career professionals looking to make their mark.

Tailoring Your CV Shows You Care

“Tailoring your CV to the role is essential,” Phoebe says. “It shows genuine interest and helps you stand out from other candidates.” Instead of sending the same application to multiple roles, take the time to align your experience, skills, and achievements with the specific job description.

This not only increases your chances of being shortlisted, it also demonstrates professionalism, preparation, and focus — all traits valued by employers.

Focus or Flexibility? Both Matter

Developing specialist knowledge in one area of insurance can make you highly competitive. Whether it’s underwriting, claims, or risk management, deep expertise can open doors and provide long-term career clarity.

That said, Phoebe emphasises the benefit of broader industry knowledge. “Having a more holistic understanding of insurance can be especially useful in roles that require cross-functional awareness or collaboration.”

For early-career professionals, starting broad and gradually specialising is a smart approach.

Know the Difference Between Large and Small Firms

When it comes to choosing between large firms and smaller organisations, both have advantages.

“Larger companies often come with structured training, formal development programmes, and diverse career paths,” Phoebe explains. “Smaller firms may offer greater autonomy, a closer-knit team, and the chance to take on meaningful responsibility from day one.”

There’s no right answer. It depends on your working style and career priorities. Consider what environment suits you best before applying.

Don’t Apply to Everything

Phoebe advises against applying to multiple roles at the same company simultaneously. “Focus on one role per application. That way, you can tailor your CV more effectively and show commitment to a specific position.”

If you're interested in more than one opportunity at a company, be strategic. Apply for your strongest fit first, then follow up later if you're unsuccessful.

Culture Comes First at Sedgwick

Sedgwick places culture and values at the centre of its hiring process. “Our people are our greatest asset,” says Phoebe. “We look for candidates who embody our values, not just those who meet the job requirements.”

These values include:

  • Act with Empathy – Creating a workplace where everyone feels heard and supported
  • Reinforce Accountability – Upholding high standards across teams
  • Inspire Inclusion – Fostering a diverse, respectful environment
  • Nurture Collaboration – Encouraging teamwork at every level
  • Guide for Growth – Committing to continuous learning and development

Empathy, in particular, sets Sedgwick apart. “It’s not just a buzzword,” Phoebe adds. “It’s how we operate and build trust with colleagues and clients alike.”
