Position Summary
As an Underwriter at CNA Hardy you will form an integral part of a market leading and high performing International Casualty team in our Lloyds of London Syndicate. Your role will be to engage with clients, brokers and CNA Hardy stakeholders across all aspects of the underwriting process, to underwrite renewal business as well as new opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwriting new and renewal risks from key broker partners within underwriting strategy, reinsurance treaty and personal underwriting authority.
- Recommends appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements for risks after complete analysis and consideration of applicant documentation, business factors and competitive situations.
- Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
- Complete all underwriting notes, pricing, peer reviews and filing within internal Casualty process.
- Prepares quotations and answers questions from Brokers, internal and external contacts.
- Prepares written communications on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Verbally notifies Brokers of decisions where appropriate in order to ensure clear understanding of the decision.
- Analyses quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten.
- May assist in marketing products and services through the brokerage community and makes field visits.
- Develops and maintains positive Broker relationships through Lloyds box attendance, client presentations and meetings.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues, regulations and trends.
- Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
- Develop proficiency in all relevant CNA systems
- Assists with preparing reports on various areas of the Casualty account where necessary.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- A minimum of 3 years of underwriting experience across Casualty, Energy or a related class of business. Experience in the International Casualty market is preferred but not essential.
- Developing technical expertise and negotiation skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to effectively interact with peer level CNA internal and external business partners.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Proven ability to build relationships with brokers and external stakeholders.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions effectively and within Underwriting Strategy.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
