Art Editor

Salary £30,000-£35,000 (dependent on experience)

FT - 35 hours per week

Hybrid - London - Travel to our London office at least twice a week

Here at Saga, we are looking for an Art Editor. The art editor will support the Art Director in delivery of art and design for Saga Magazine brand. They will ensure all design meets the high quality of design associated with the brand and adheres to the creative style guide, under the direction of the Art Director.

They will be a creative thinker and have the ability to come up with design solutions to present editorial content in an innovative way. They will be well versed in commissioning illustration and work effectively with the Picture Editor and Art Director in planning and producing photo shoots. They will also need to keep up-to-date with trends in photography and illustration and constantly be on the lookout for new and interesting talent. They will be able to take on picture research as needed and will be aware of licensing and rights.

They will be able to advise on picture use for the Saga Magazine website and be a digital native, able to confidently produce assets for our digital channels.

The art editor will be an Adobe InDesign expert, with a good working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator and will be able to undertake simple retouching. They will have experience of flatplanning software.

They will be a great communicator, being able to articulately communicate with the team and colleagues in the wider business, to ensure the smooth running of the department.

The art editor will assist with creating engaging and beautifully designed decks/presentations for the magazine team.

The art editor will be capable of being able to successfully deputise for the Art Director in all areas, from Art Direction of shoots to sending the magazine to press. They will be confident in managing freelancers and ensuring the workflow of the art and pictures desk is maintained at all stages of the production process.

Role Responsibility

Producing engaging, exciting magazine layouts and associated print design assets
Following the Saga Magazine creative style guide, keeping art and design on brand
Advising and assisting the digital content editors with picture usage
Working to the agreed deadlines
Proven understanding of good typography, layout, colour and grid structures in print magazines
Commissioning fantastic contributors, including illustrators, stylists and photographers
Seeing the production of pages from conception to delivery, including managing amends, communicating with the out-of-house repro team and preparing pages for press
Providing design support to the marketing team in producing subscription marketing design assets
Providing design support to the commercial team in producing advertorial layouts and the associated amends and proofing
Providing design support to the digital content editors, advising with picture selection and resizing images
Being aware of the needs of our readership, and contributing creative ideas to deliver our content to them effectively

The Ideal Candidate

• Several years of experience working in consumer magazine design

• Experience in art directing photoshoots

• Experience in commissioning illustration

• Experience in digital design best practice

• Experience in marketing design

• Experience in designing powerpoint presentations

• Proficient in Adobe creative suite

• Expert in Adobe InDesign

• Understanding of photography

• Proficient in powerpoint

• Understanding of illustration

• Proficient in basic retouching via Photoshop

• Understanding of online flatplanning software
