The Role
The Delegated Authorities - North America (DANA) team writes of book of USD175m+ GPI across multiple lines of business including Commercial Property, Homeowners Property, Commercial Automobile Physical Damage, Commercial Automobile Liability and Commercial General Liability. We write this business throughout North America as well as in Canada and the US Virgin Islands.
We are looking for a experienced class underwriter with a focus on US & Canadian Transportation to work closely with the Head of Delegated Authorities to meet the requirements of the business plans and the strategic targets for premium income, profitability and return on capital as set out by the Board.
Key Responsibilities:
- To underwrite delegated business in accordance with the Syndicate Business Plan for the division and within the terms of the underwriting authority given.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with brokers and clients to establish Canopius as a preferred market for North American binder business.
- Working alongside others in the DANA team to underwrite and oversee the renewal of our existing business as well as identify and develop new business opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with other underwriting and support units within Canopius to maximize efficient use of internal company resource to support business activities.
- To ensure that all business written complies with Canopius internal policies, procedures and controls and that these are understood and adhered to by the team.
- To ensure that business is only accepted through intermediaries and coverholders approved by Canopius in accordance with internal procedures
- To ensure that complete and accurate underwriting records are maintained.
- To promote a culture where client’s needs are placed at the heart of underwriting decision-making and business is conducted in a manner that meets Canopius internal standards and FCA guidelines.
- To actively assist the development of junior members of the team.

- To provide reports and management information to the Head of Delegated Authorities, as required.
Skills and Experience:
- Significant experience in the North American delegated authority market particularly in relation to U.S. & Canadian Transportation business including Auto Physical Damage, Motor Truck Cargo, Non-Trucking Liability, Truckers General Liability and Primary Commercial Auto Liability.
- Experience of both portfolio binder underwriting/management as well as underlying per risk underwriting e.g. Risks under lineslips or special acceptance referrals.
- Good communication skills
- Previous management experience preferable
- Organised, methodical quick thinker.
- Demonstrable problem solving abilities
- Ability to work to deadlines and manage workload priorities effectively
- Desire to expand knowledge within the industry via professional exams
- Data mining, statistical modelling and data visualisation
- Experience with Power BI is preferable but not essential.
- High level understanding of Excel, should be proficient in creating complex formulae
- Highly numerate and logical – strong mathematical/statistical knowledge is advantageous
- Ability to interpret large volumes of data and present in a clear and concise manner
- Ability to articulate findings in writing and/or in person both internally and externally
- Interpret written guidelines for Underwriting rules and apply to real life scenarios
