The opportunity:
This underwriter will be joining the Markel War and Terrorism Division based in London. The role will be working with underwriters and senior underwriters, divisional management and actuarial to implement the underwriting strategy and keep them informed of progress and developments.
We accept risks in the areas of Hull, Cargo, War, Specie, Liability and Terrorism on a world-wide basis. We are leaders in a number of our chosen areas and require a dedication to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role.
What you’ll be doing:
- Work with underwriters and senior underwriters, divisional management and actuarial to implement the underwriting strategy and keep them informed of progress and developments
- Demonstrate sound and conservative underwriting judgement
- Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
- Prioritise the team’s underwriting strategy and adhere to it at all times
- Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
- Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markle’s exposure
- Travel to represent Markel as required by Divisional Management
- Actively keep knowledge and skills up-to-date through courses and seminars, where appropriate.
- Positively contribute towards the team’s underwriting strategy
- Attend regular broker and client meetings and travel to represent Markel as required by class head
- Develop strong relationships with existing and new brokers
- Actively seek business opportunities
Our must-haves:
- Wholesale and retail war and terrorism underwriting expertise required;
- Proven expertise in delivering superior underwriting results required;
- Broad understanding of claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions;
- Understand and enjoy working in a highly matrixed environment.
- High energy, ability to deliver outstanding written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter; flexible and spontaneous;
- Proven track record in setting and meeting objectives and impact and influencing peers and subordinates to “buy in”
- Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability
- Have a network of London and international distribution channels
