The opportunity:
The purpose of Markel ’s Internal Audit department is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services crafted to add value and improve Markel’s operations.
Our team operates globally and consists of twenty-seven permanent staff, including five London-based staff. The department covers insurance operations, IT audit, corporate shared services, Markel Ventures, insurance linked securities (ILS) and program business. As a member of the Internal Audit Team, you will coordinate reviews and assess the design and effectiveness of internal controls over the insurance operations.
You will work to understand and assess key risks and controls, whilst adhering to our audit methodology to ensure timely and accurate analysis of business processes, controls, governance, and supporting technology. You will contribute to the overall success of the department and Markel by suggesting ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of audit processes.
What you’ll be doing:
Identify, understand, and assess Markel's risks, controls, and governance and communicate the results of your work to audit clients and other stakeholders.
Plan, organise, and prioritise activities in order to complete assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner with minimal oversight.
Assist and/ or lead in planning the audit scope, preparing the audit program, and applying appropriate auditing procedures.
Identify issues, deviations, and root causes and effectively communicate (both written and verbal) issues and proposed solutions to audit management and clients and then diligently follow-up on actions through to closure.
Prepare and organise work papers, document conclusions, and prepare formal audit reports in accordance with established guidelines.
Work collaboratively within the Audit department, look to build and foster internal customer relationships, and maintain a positive working relationship with external auditors.
Have a basic understanding of IT General Controls and can complete defined audit program steps in this area.
Provide input and suggests improvements to audit department internal processes.
Willing and able to provide constructive feedback to other auditors. Looks to share knowledge/expertise gained from experience.
Use data analysis techniques within an audit to accomplish audit objectives and to present the visual results.
What you will bring:
ACCA or equivalent, Internal Audit or Risk Certifications preferred (UK)
Strong communication skills with the ability to make presentations to leadership.
Analyse processes and recommend alternatives to mitigate risks.
Ability to take ownership for small to medium sized projects.
Excellent Excel skills and having experience of using data analysis tools would be beneficial
Internal Audit experience in financial services, preferably within the insurance industry.
Experience in the insurance industry or financial services operations would be useful.
