The Opportunity:
An exciting graduate opportunity has arisen to join our ever-evolving Catastrophe Modelling and Exposure Management team as a Graduate Catastrophe Risk Analyst. The successful candidate will be an essential team member supporting data-driven risk insights across multiple lines of business, including property, marine, energy, and specialty classes. You’ll gain exposure to a wide range of modelling tools and analytics techniques designed to enhance your technical expertise and promote innovation in how we assess and manage catastrophe risk. While working in this team, you’ll build a broad foundation of knowledge across natural (climate and seismic hazards) and non-natural (cyber, terror, war) catastrophe risk management techniques. This will provide you with the diverse experience and skills needed to develop a long-term career in catastrophe risk management or open up alternative paths within insurance risk analytics. Above all, you’ll be empowered to take ownership of your professional growth and make a meaningful impact from day one.
The Catastrophe and Exposure Management team collaborates closely with underwriters, actuaries and the wider International Portfolio Analytics team to deliver well-informed insights that guide strategic underwriting and capital management decisions. By analysing, interpreting, and communicating complex catastrophe data, you will help improve the company’s understanding of our exposures, enhance portfolio resilience, and contribute to sustainable profitability.
What you’ll be doing:
Within the programme you will:
- Dive into learning about the insurance industry, build valuable business connections, and shine in presentations to underwriting divisions.
- Harness the power of SQL and Python to drive cutting-edge analytics.
- Master the usage of industry standard catastrophe models and aggregation tools for pricing and portfolio analysis.
- Learn to tell a story through data, using data visualisation techniques to display patterns, trends and outliers effectively.
- Master the art of data management and Microsoft SQL.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across Markel’s International offices.
- Take part in structured training conducted by senior employees with an extensive amount of knowledge in the industry to ultimately help successful candidates learn the fundamentals of insurance.
- Develop your career, with regular check-ins so that you have every opportunity to progress and gain more autonomy within your role.
- Gain unparalleled exposure to and knowledge of the role of a Catastrophe Analyst.
- Study towards a credible Chartered Institute of Insurance Advanced Diploma (ACII) via a Level 6 Senior Insurance Professional Apprenticeship.
