The Opportunity:
An exciting graduate opportunity has come up to join Markel International’s ever expanding International Portfolio Analytics team as a Graduate Portfolio Analyst. The successful candidate will be an integral team member who will provide data-driven insights for the business, more specifically underwriters across all areas of our Wholesale and National Markets divisions. The candidate will be given exposure to a wide range of analytics tools which will develop their technical skill set and encourage innovation.
Whilst working in this team, you'll develop a breadth of knowledge as you have the option to rotate between the Portfolio Management, Pricing Transformation, Catastrophe Management and Data Science teams. The rotational role will equip you with the diverse knowledge and skills necessary to build a long-term career in insurance analytics or alternatively open up a range of different career paths as a result. Moreover, if it transpires that you excel within a particular area, and you are keen to further specialise within that function, the team at Markel are happy for you to do so. Critically, you will be afforded the opportunity to drive your own development.
The International Portfolio Analytics team work in partnership with underwriters to achieve the common goal of making well-informed strategic underwriting decisions, that will improve our profitability, by collecting, organising and interpreting statistical information.
What you’ll be doing:
Within the programme you will:
- Dive into learning about the insurance industry, build valuable business connections, and shine in presentations to underwriting divisions. Plus, chart your path to success with options for external qualifications such as CII and actuarial exams.
- Harness the power of Python, SQL and other coding languages to drive cutting-edge analytics.
- Create and maintain a variety of pricing models using specialist tools and the newest technologies within the insurance industry.
- Learn to tell a story through data, using data visualisation techniques to display patterns, trends and outliers effectively.
- Build reports in Power BI and present to the underwriters.
- Master the art of data management and Microsoft SQL.
- Take part in structured training conducted by senior employees with an extensive amount of knowledge in the industry to ultimately help successful candidates learn the fundamentals of insurance.
- Develop your career, with regular check-ins so that you have every opportunity to progress and gain more autonomy within your role.
- Gain unparalleled exposure to and knowledge of the role of a Pricing Actuary.
