Job Description
The Role:
At Canopius, our delivery teams are responsible for ensuring that business users can effectively harness data insights to drive strategic decision making. Our data strategy is centred around an enterprise Lakehouse platform on Databricks, avoiding fragmented, ungoverned silos on legacy technologies that hamper creativity and scalability. We are building a governed, interoperable data estate that enables self-service for our business teams and provides the trusted foundation for advanced analytics, machine learning and AI to accelerate change across our industry.
The Senior Data Reporting Analyst owns the provision of trusted, accurate and timely reporting, partnering directly with business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver robust solutions. The role both produces and submits reporting/regulatory returns, helping to automate production to enable business self-serve wherever possible.
Working to fixed regulatory cycles and deadlines, the role spans regulatory and operational reporting, applying an accuracy-first mindset to every output. As a senior member of the team, you will also act as a role model and mentor to other team members, championing reporting standards, reusability and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate is an experienced reporting analyst who is enthusiastic about using technology to accelerate change within our industry, and who takes pride in producing accurate, well-controlled outputs in a regulated environment. You will have strong SQL and advanced Excel skills as standard, with experience of Power BI and Databricks being a distinct advantage. You should be comfortable engaging stakeholders to shape requirements as you are building the solution hands-on, motivated by the opportunity to automate manual processes and enable self-service.
Responsibilities will include:
- Work closely with business stakeholders to produce and submit accurate, timely and auditable regulatory and operational reporting, meeting internal standards and external regulatory requirements to fixed reporting cycles and deadlines.
- Automate manual and legacy reporting processes, embedding validation, reconciliation and automated checks to ensure trusted outputs. Enhance existing automated reporting solutions.
- Engage directly with business stakeholders across the business to understand and document new regulatory reporting requirements, and translate them into clear specifications.
- Visualise, plan and execute the end-to-end delivery of large reporting work items, seeking clarification of ambiguous specifications and consistently delivering complex work in line with development standards. Look beyond the immediate scope of work items to ensure alignment with the wider solution and data design, proactively flagging the risk of technical debt.
- Maintain documentation, data lineage and audit trails for regulated outputs, and support audit and regulatory queries with supporting evidence.
- Build trusted relationships with stakeholders across delivery and business teams; proactively manage expectations, communicate trade-offs and constraints, and influence decisions with evidence and risk-based recommendations, navigating disagreement constructively and escalating appropriately.
- Explain complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Break complex work into deliverable increments, produce realistic estimates, and highlight dependencies and risks early. Drive clarity on scope, acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements such as performance, resilience and security.
- Balance delivery momentum with quality, and demonstrate resilience when requirements change, operating effectively in uncertain or evolving environments.
- Manage own task list and priorities, working confidently both within agile development squads and as a self-starter.
- Act as a role model and mentor to other team members through pairing, peer review, constructive feedback and knowledge sharing, helping to raise the quality and pace of delivery across the team.
- Act with integrity and accountability; champion continuous improvement and the safe, reliable adoption of new tools and capabilities to improve reporting delivery.
Skills:
- Proven track record of delivering regulatory and operational reporting in a regulated environment, with an accuracy-first mindset and a keen eye for detail.
- Demonstrable experience of automating manual, recurring reporting processes and embedding validation, reconciliation and control checks to ensure trusted outputs.
- Strong T-SQL skills, writing and optimising queries to build and support complex reporting and data transformations.
- Advanced Excel knowledge, including the ability to analyse legacy spreadsheets and convert into automated solutions.
- Experience of working with Power BI and Databricks is desirable.
- Experience working with business stakeholders to obtain and document requirements, translating ambiguous business needs into well-governed solutions.
- Experience working in an Agile and Scrum environment, combined with the ability to work autonomously as a confident self-starter who owns their own task list.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset, and the curiosity to learn new tools, patterns and skills quickly.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience of querying data warehouse dimensional models is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Azure data technologies, version control and CI/CD tooling (e.g. Azure DevOps, Git) for managing report and pipeline assets is advantageous.
- Familiarity with specialty (re)insurance or Lloyd's market data (bordereaux, delegated authority, underwriting, claims) and associated regulatory returns is advantageous.
