The Underwriting Strategy & Analytics team leads underwriting portfolio analytics, business mix and performance assessment, and shapes underwriting strategy for our global (re)insurance business. The team is seeking a Senior Analyst to support quantitative and qualitative portfolio analytics, assessment of risk-adjusted returns on capital, and development of underwriting strategy recommendations.
The Senior Analyst will own and execute a suite of analytics that drive underwriting and portfolio strategy. This includes owning and updating our Underwriting Capital Model which measures risk-adjusted returns from our (re)insurance businesses. It also includes data-driven analytics on business / portfolio mix, diversification and volatility assessments, and pro-forma analyses of portfolio mix changes. The ideal candidate will be adept at using portfolio data to build visualizations, exhibits, and presentations that enhance understanding and insight on the portfolio.
Beyond portfolio assessment, the candidate will also conduct industry trends and partner with Actuarial on underwriting profitability analysis to identify promising areas of product / underwriting that SPNT can pursue to enhance portfolio returns. This includes adjustments to our current strategy / approach to the market positioning and supporting deep dive analyses on current business.
The team is highly analytical and consists of individuals with deep P&C product expertise, a thorough understanding of portfolio data and analytics and the ability to dive into technical details as well as come up to a strategic level to present analytics outputs to senior executives. The team has a highly strategic mindset continuously assessing SPNT's underwriting stance, risk appetite, product mix and go-to-market strategy. The team's work is critical to driving our north star objective of building a portfolio with a low-90s Combined Ratio, 12 - 15% ROE, through the cycle, with a defined corridor of volatility. This position reports to the Underwriting Strategy & Analytics Lead.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining, enhancing, and running the UW Capital Model.
- Analysing return on capital for SPNT underwriting businesses.
- Guiding leaders and making recommendations to allocate capital to enhance portfolio returns and optimize business mix.
- Leading other analytical and data projects to drive Underwriting performance.
- Supporting UW Strategy and Analytics Lead to develop materials for presentation to ELT and Board.
- Automating analytics to drive Underwriting strategy - data pipelining, visualization, analytics.
- Executing bespoke / ad-hoc analytics projects to drive UW strategy in CUO Office.
- Supporting portfolio management / shaping to drive business performance.
Your skills and abilities should include:
- BS or BA in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics or other quantitative fields.
- MBA or MS preferred; Actuarial credentials (FCAS, ACAS), a benefit but not essential.
- Data analytics skills including database querying, SQL, data visualization; Python coding skills a plus.
- Strong financial modelling expertise / acumen in the P&C industry.
- P&C and / or A&H experience / product knowledge is a must.
- Well rounded, adept in technical / quantitative aspects of work.
- Strong communicator, with superior presentation development skills, data visualization / storytelling.
- Strong team player, collegial, works well with others / cross-departmentally to get things done.
- Very curious, voracious learner, always looking to build and grow knowledge and expertise in the P&C re/insurance market.
