The Role
The Senior Claims Adjuster – Reinsurance is responsible for the adjustment and management of a portfolio of complex reinsurance claims, including Treaty Casualty, Marine, Property and Aviation.
The role focuses on end-to-end claims handling, technical excellence, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring claims are assessed, reserved and settled accurately, fairly and in a timely manner.
The postholder will act as a technical referral point for complex claims, supporting the broader team and contributing to high-quality claims outcomes aligned with the Canopius claims strategy.
Responsibilities will include:
Claims Management & Technical Expertise
- Manage a portfolio of reinsurance claims, including complex and high-value losses across treaty classes
- Ensure timely and accurate coverage analysis, liability determination, reserving and settlement of claims
- Maintain strong control of large losses and catastrophe exposures
- Apply reinsurance contract knowledge (including treaty wordings) to drive appropriate claims outcomes
- Ensure all claims are handled in accordance with internal authority levels and Claims Manual requirements
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date claims records and documentation
Reserving & Portfolio Oversight
- Establish and maintain accurate claim reserves, ensuring alignment with expected loss development
- Contribute to claims MI, including analysis of trends, large losses and portfolio performance
- Support reserving processes through input into monthly and quarterly reviews
- Identify and escalate potential adverse developments or emerging issues
Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with cedants, brokers, underwriters, actuaries and internal stakeholders
- Act as a key point of contact for claims discussions and negotiations
- Support effective collaboration across global claims teams, including Bermuda and Singapore where required
- Represent Canopius professionally in external interactions and market engagements
Collaboration & Contribution
- Work closely with underwriting and actuarial colleagues to support portfolio performance and profitability monitoring
- Contribute to claims reporting, including large loss updates and material developments
- Share insights and market intelligence to inform underwriting and claims strategies
- Support delivery of claims function initiatives, including process improvements and change activities
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to claims governance frameworks, regulatory requirements and internal procedures
- Escalate complex or high-value claims in line with referral processes
- Maintain strong awareness of legal, regulatory and market developments impacting reinsurance claims
Skills and Experience:
- Strong technical expertise in reinsurance claims handling
- Proven experience managing complex and/or high-value claims in the London Market environment
- Good understanding of reinsurance contract structures and coverage interpretation
- Experience working with brokers, cedants and internal stakeholders
- Strong analytical and reserving capability
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple claims effectively
- Knowledge of Lloyd’s market
