Wealth Solutions: Retirement
Launch Your Career in Actuarial Consulting
Aon is looking for students completing a year in industry as part of their degree to join our Early Careers Launch Development Programme in actuarial roles. You do not need to be an actuarial expert on day one. Through our Launch Programme and on-the-job learning, you will develop practical actuarial and advisory skills, applying quantitative techniques to help clients understand, price and manage financial risk.
As an Actuarial Industrial Placement colleague, you will build the skills, confidence and market knowledge needed to turn complex quantitative information into clear business insight and support better client decisions. By reviewing AI-pre-populated baselines, setting and challenging assumptions, and interpreting results, you will learn how AI and global delivery teams can support routine calculation so that effort concentrates on judgement, scenario thinking and communication, while preserving the hands-on experience needed to develop your actuarial understanding.
Aon’s Wealth Solutions: Retirement teams help organisations make better decisions about pensions, retirement programmes and long-term financial commitments. In the UK, companies hold significant assets in pension schemes and must plan carefully to meet their obligations over many years. Our actuarial consultants advise trustees and employers on defined benefit pension schemes, helping them understand funding positions, manage financial and operational risks and prepare for the future.
How work is changing
Technology, including AI-enabled tools and global delivery teams, increasingly supports routine data preparation, reconciliation and baseline calculation. During your placement, you will learn how these tools support actuarial work and how colleagues use them to focus on validation, output checking, report drafting and documentation. With guidance, you will practise framing clear prompts, refining outputs for the task and client context, checking AI-supported analysis, testing assumptions and recognising when human judgement is needed. We will help you build your understanding of key calculations, communication techniques, project delivery, digital workflows, commercial awareness and professional judgement.
During your placement, you will gain hands-on actuarial experience. You will develop your understanding of how data, models, evidence, client needs, and business priorities build value. You will be supported to ask questions, explore different perspectives and connect your work to the decisions it helps inform.
Your role as an Actuarial Industrial Placement
You will work across a range of client teams, supporting colleagues who advise either the trustees responsible for pension schemes or the companies that sponsor them.
No two days are the same. You will work across a range of client teams, supporting colleagues who advise either the trustees responsible for pension schemes or the companies that sponsor them. You will gain meaningful experience while developing the technical, consulting and professional skills needed for a future actuarial career.
What you will do
Actuarial and Analytical Tasks, such as:
- Supporting the building and running of models for pension scheme analysis, reviewing AI-supported baselines, testing scenarios and validating outputs, with guidance to spot anomalies and understand when automated results should be questioned.
- Helping with funding and accounting valuations, projections, benefit calculations, data reconciliation and pension scheme reporting, while learning how inputs, results and assumptions are kept accurate, consistent and well documented.
- Conducting data and risk analysis to identify patterns and test scenarios, and gathering relevant evidence and wider context to help colleagues support client decisions.
- Learning about ways trustees and companies can manage or reduce pension scheme risks, including longevity, investment and inflation risk.
Client Focused Tasks, such as:
- Drafting clear reports, presentations and analysis summaries, learning how to explain technical information for different audiences and connect it to client needs.
- Supporting project workstreams, using AI-enabled tools and working with offshore analysts as part of one workflow, while keeping documentation organised and priorities clear.
- Supporting senior actuaries in client meetings, listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions and learning how different teams work together to understand needs and deliver well-rounded solutions.
- Contributing ideas to improve processes and digital workflows, testing new approaches with support and sharing what you learn with colleagues.
You may also gain exposure to specialist areas, depending on business need and location, such as:
- Risk Settlement, advising clients on the best way to reduce risk through transferring it to a third party.
- Member Options, helping clients reduce risk and/or cost by offering pension scheme members the choice to reshape their benefits to better suit their individual circumstances.
- Analysis of mortality and other demographic factors to predict future trends within Aon's Demographic HorizonsTM team.
Your Development
As an Aon Industrial Placement, you will be enrolled onto our Launch Programme when you join. This development programme is built around 3 core elements:
- Business learning. On-the-job learning with actuarial consultants, client teams and solution line specialists, helping you understand Wealth Solutions: Retirement, the wider Aon business and how your work contributes to client outcomes.
- Centralised learning. UK Industrial Placement colleagues complete an Aon induction, monthly webinars, business skills training and workshops designed to build your confidence, knowledge and network across our business.
- Feedback and support. At the start of your placement, you will agree goals with your line manager and receive regular feedback and support throughout the 12-month programme. As your confidence grows, you will have opportunities to take greater ownership of defined tasks and workstreams, adapt to changing priorities and share your learning with others.
Your career beyond your Industrial Placement programme
Our Industrial Placement programme is designed as a potential first step towards a long-term career with Aon. Your performance during the placement may lead to an offer for a place on our graduate programme in the same business area the following year. If you return as a graduate, you will receive continued technical and business skills training and support to work towards qualification as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), including paid study leave and access to study and tuition materials.
