The Team
The Risk Department provides support to the firm's Senior Management and to the wider business, to ensure that the firm develops and maintains the very highest standards of professional conduct, sets a healthy risk culture and complies with its legal and regulatory requirements. The Professional Indemnity (PI) team sits within the department as a sub-set, managing contentious risk issues, identifying claims trends, promoting and embedding best practice throughout the firm's global network, in order to mitigate risk.
This role is a hybrid one with a focus on PI and regulatory issues, but also with involvement in more general Risk related projects, particularly those with a contentious element.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the Head of Professional Indemnity in ensuring that professional negligence issues are dealt with promptly and effectively, in a way that ensures compliance with our regulatory obligations and delivers best outcomes for our clients and the firm itself.
- Working closely with the fee earning teams across the firm to ensure that live claims, circumstances that may give rise to a claim and contentious risk issues are reported to the PI team and the firm's PI insurers (as appropriate) and seamlessly managed both locally and centrally.
- Having day to day conduct of PI claims against the firm, and other risk related claims, both at pre-action stage and in active proceedings.
- Supporting the Head of PI on reporting to all key stakeholders (including via regular Board risk reporting) on claims and notifications to ensure the firm has appropriate oversight of claims exposure and management.
- Identifying and monitoring notification and claims trends across the business and working collaboratively with client operations teams in gathering management information to support process improvement within practice groups and regions.
- Working alongside the Head of PI and COLP to place the firm's global PI and cyber insurances annually.
- Managing regulatory investigations and other risk related contentious issues, including client and third party complaints.
- Working collaboratively with the firm's Finance team to ensure all financial implications of claims and insurance requirements are fully provided for.
- Identifying the need for, and developing/ delivering, relevant training and communications/guidance materials for fee earning teams, to ensure lessons are learned from prior errors/omissions (made both within the firm and the legal sector generally) to mitigate repeated errors and support a no blame culture across the firm.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Qualified lawyer (or equivalent) with experience in an international law firm.
- Litigation experience, ideally with a focus on lawyers' professional negligence.
- A self starter with the ability to work independently, under appropriate supervision.
- A proven understanding/knowledge of issues arising within a commercial legal practice.
- Excellent ability to manage and influence senior stakeholders, driving action and challenging inaction.
- Strong partnership abilities; skilled in influencing and motivating others and ability to build connections and work collaboratively across boundaries at all levels.
- Strong project management, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation development and delivery.
- A strong service focus with the need to listen and understand the essential requirements of different areas of the firm.
- Unequivocal commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and strict confidentiality of firm and client information.
