Find the sales environment that suits you
Insurance sales roles can involve very different conversations and working patterns. You might help an individual arrange cover over the telephone, develop relationships with business owners or work with brokers who place insurance on behalf of their clients.
Before applying, establish who you would speak to, how opportunities are generated and what happens after a sale. A role handling incoming enquiries will offer a different working day from one focused on prospecting, attending meetings and building a pipeline over several months.
Across these settings, listening carefully, explaining products clearly and recognising when to involve a technical colleague are valuable skills. Strong relationships depend on understanding what customers and partners need, alongside meeting commercial objectives.

Customer sales and renewals
Sales advisers and consultants help new and existing customers explore cover, obtain quotations and arrange policies. Responsibilities may include responding to enquiries, following up incomplete quotes and contacting customers ahead of renewal. Some positions combine sales with policy administration and customer service.
Business development
Business development executives and managers identify potential clients, develop opportunities and progress conversations towards new business. The role may involve networking, referrals, prospecting or working with leads generated by marketing. Check whether you would arrange initial meetings, manage the full sales process or hand opportunities to another team.
Account management
Account managers focus on maintaining and developing existing relationships. Depending on the employer, your accounts could be businesses, brokers or other partners. You may prepare account plans, coordinate colleagues, address service issues and identify opportunities to expand the relationship.
Broker distribution
Distribution professionals help insurers and managing general agents develop business through brokers and other intermediaries. The work can involve managing a broker panel, explaining which risks the business wants to insure and collaborating with underwriters to progress suitable opportunities.
Partnerships and strategic sales
Partnership roles focus on relationships through which insurance products or services reach customers. Responsibilities may include identifying partners, negotiating commercial arrangements, coordinating launches and reviewing performance. Senior positions can involve setting the direction for a channel, region or wider distribution team.
What to check about leads and targets
When comparing insurance sales jobs, ask how the employer supports people in achieving their objectives. Understanding the sales process will help you assess whether the opportunity suits your strengths.
- Will you receive enquiries, follow up warm leads, work through referrals or generate your own prospects?
- Will you inherit a client portfolio or broker panel, or build one from the beginning?
- Are you measured on new business, renewals, revenue, appointments or a combination of outcomes?
- What help is available from marketing, underwriting, account handlers and sales support colleagues?
- How much time is allowed for training and building a pipeline before full targets apply?
- How does the employer assess the quality of customer conversations alongside sales performance?
Outbound calling does not always mean cold calling, as some roles involve contacting people who have already requested a quote or previously held a policy. Check the source and purpose of those calls before deciding whether a telephone sales position is right for you.
Understanding salary, commission and OTE in insurance sales roles
If a vacancy includes commission or on-target earnings (OTE), establish how the package works before comparing it with another offer. OTE usually combines basic salary with the variable pay expected when agreed targets are met.
Ask which elements are guaranteed, how individual and team performance affect earnings, when payments are made and whether any limits or repayment conditions apply. It is also useful to ask what proportion of the team achieved the advertised OTE during the previous year.
For positions involving regular travel, check the territory, overnight stays and arrangements for a vehicle or travel expenses.
Starting or progressing your insurance sales career
Experience in customer service, sales or account management can be relevant to some insurance roles, particularly where product training is provided. Use your application to demonstrate how you understand needs, organise follow-up activity and build trust, while checking which vacancies require existing insurance knowledge.
Experienced candidates should explain the products, clients or distribution channels they know and give context for their results. Describe how you developed a pipeline, retained an account or strengthened a partnership, making your own contribution clear.
