Underwriting Counsel
This is an exciting opportunity to join Hamilton’s growing global legal team. Based in the US or Bermuda, the successful candidate will primarily support the Bermuda and US Underwriting and Claims functions in the review, drafting and advising on wordings for the primary and excess Casualty, Financial Lines/Management Liability, and Property re/insurance lines of business.

What you will do
- Timely and accurately draft and maintain re/insurance contract wordings and ancillary documents
- Collaborate with the underwriting, claims, legal, compliance and actuarial teams to help drive the strategic direction of wordings in support of Hamilton’s strategic business imperatives
- Assess internal stakeholders’ needs and offer timely, thoughtful, thorough, legally compliant, unique solutions
- Provide advocacy support to underwriting and claims departments in the negotiation and resolution of coverage queries and disputes
- Liaise with the appropriate teams to design, implement and maintain an electronic wording repository
- Stay abreast of judicial, legislative and regulatory activity, industry developments and emerging issues; evaluate potential impact to Hamilton’s product lines and timely and concisely communicate same to internal stakeholders
- Prepare white papers and memos and provide training opportunities for the business to further technical coverage knowledge and product use
- Perform additional tasks and functions as may be required
What we require for the role
- J.D. degree with bar admission, required
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in property casualty insurance/reinsurance industry with demonstrated contract review and drafting experience required
- Experience drafting bespoke transactional policy/treaty language in compliance with applicable law and regulation
- Sound technical ability in product lines and coverage with demonstrable ability to provide clear and concise legal guidance to the business
- Comfortable with working autonomously and taking lead role with respect to wordings projects and initiatives
- Experience reviewing, opining on and drafting NDA’s preferred
- Experience with energy and/or Environmental Liability a plus
- Experience with Bermuda forms and/or excess and surplus a plus
- Motivated self-starter, comfortable with managing competing priorities under limited supervision
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Proven organizational skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy a must
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
