The Role
The Working Capital Team Leader is a key role within a fast‑paced Working Capital Team, responsible for managing the lock‑up performance of approximately 110 senior partners across UK Non‑Insurance teams. The position oversees the flow of billings in line with agreed targets and manages a billing team of four. The role supports senior stakeholders and ensures best practice across WIP management, billing, and revenue processes.
The Team
The UK Non‑Insurance Working Capital Team provides essential support to Practice Areas, ensuring effective WIP management and the achievement of billing and lock‑up targets. The team supports partners in all aspects of billing and WIP processes and works closely with the Working Capital Manager, senior leadership, and fee‑earning teams.
Main Responsibilities
• Manage the output of senior and billing staff, ensuring accurate target setting and strong performance
• Lead WIP meetings with Senior Partners and finance leadership to drive billing performance, focusing on under‑performing clients and partners
• Hold regular 1:1s, catch‑ups, and ensure performance management processes are adhered to
• Support the Working Capital Manager with ad‑hoc projects and change initiatives
• Review and document existing credit control and billing processes to ensure efficiency and compliance
• Act as an escalation point for billing challenges (e.g., lack of partner engagement)
• Ensure succession planning and development plans are in place, including cross‑training
• Provide hands‑on billing support during month‑end and busy periods
• Assist with planning and forecasting of billing
• Document processes and align practices with other Working Capital teams
• Act as deputy for the Working Capital Manager during absences
• Serve as a key link between fee‑earning and finance teams
Essential Skills & Experience
Experience & Technical Skills
• Experience working in a legal environment
• Preferably experienced with 3E
• Electronic billing experience
• Knowledge of apportionment (multi‑party), net recovery, and joint billing
• Understanding of foreign currency issues
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills
• Knowledge of VAT regulations relating to solicitor client billing
• Strong numeracy and analytical skills
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
