The Opportunity:
The Summer Internship is a fantastic way to gain valuable insight into our global insurance organisation. This is an 8 week programme designed to provide you with an opportunity to learn about the business through on the job experience.
The internship programme will also support you in developing a range of skills that will be helpful to begin your career. Throughout the placement you will be able to undertake important work and projects, bring new ideas and give a fresh perspective to the business.
The internship is made up of three elements; on the job training, a summer intern project and professional skills training:
On the job training
- Mini projects within the team
- Support the business in managing increased workloads
- Job shadowing
- Bring a fresh perspective to solve problems
Summer intern project
Alongside work experience running a small project is a great way to develop skills such as:
- Project management
- Problem solving
- Collaboration
Professional skills training
- Underpinned by the Markel Competency Model and each training session is aligned to a competency
- Blend of virtual classrooms (courses) and online content (Workday Learning)
What you’ll be doing:
As a core component of Markel International’s insurance operations, the Wholesale/London Market division trades globally with medium to large businesses and offer larger premiums and limits. With offices around the world, Markel's Wholesale/ London Market division encompasses three underwriting divisions- Marine and Energy; Professional, Financial Risks and Cyber; and Specialty- alongside an award-winning Claims team, as well as dedicated Operations and Strategic Business Development teams. With many of their risks written through Lloyd’s of London marketplace, their ambition is to become the best speciality insurer out there.
As a Summer Intern, you’ll be assigned to one of our underwriting divisions, operations teams, or our Distribution Strategies & Business Development team. Throughout your eightweek internship, you will:
- Gain exposure to the Lloyd’s of London insurance market, with the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from various teams and visit the iconic Lloyd’s of London building.
- Develop insight into key processes within your placement team e.g. underwriting process, providing support to team members and senior managers through a range of administrative and projectbased tasks
- Work on ad-hoc projects within the team
- Shadow underwriters/senior managers at client/broker meetings
- Network with current early careers participants
- Own and run your own project with the rest of the intern cohort (brief to be provided by Markel), providing exposure to other areas and functions in the business
You will be based out of our London office. To ensure that you have the best experience, you will be required to be in the office four days per week, with work from home (optional) on a Friday.
